Recent Events& Activities
Many, many thanks to Betty Marcus and her loyal and devoted husband, Gene. Betty sees to it that
our refreshments are coordinated and keeps us looking quite organized at all our meetings. Many thanks also to Don and
Joann Mellen who helped with set-up for our Christmas party and who also donated those beautiful centerpieces.
The Air Force Band Concert on October 27th was wonderful. It also gave us a really good look at the
Akron Civic Theatre - a treat in and of itself. The spaghetti dinner fundraiser on November 7th at the Church of the
Master in Akron was a whopping success. We hope to do it again and also are planning a Pancake Breakfast on March 12th in
2005.
Thanks to the following helpers at the spaghetti dinner. Some also helped with Hower House. Big smooches
to you all! It is always dangerous to say "thank you" to a group of people who did as much as all our volunteers
did for these events, so apologies to you if I've left off your name, and our very heartfelt thanks anyhow. Without
specifying, helpers were seen doing kitchen duty, ticket taking, clearing tables and running for beverage refills, serving
and checking to see all our guests were served correctly and happy with their dinner. Some folks contributed cakes,
donations, and some helped by "schmoozing" with the guests. Every gesture helped contribute to our success.
I
would specially like to thank (in no particular order): Tom and Shirley Hartney, Gene and Betty Marcus, Don and Joann
Mellen, Ann and Bill Heflin, Dave and Liz Belvin, Ida and Bob Morehead, Jim Frost, Elisa and Katie Seiberling, Kim and
Jonathan Belvin, Emma Tindell, Dianne and David Allison, Margaret and Harry Kuntz, Brian McIlhiney and Julie Burtz, Margarita
Bowers, Dreama Powell, Alyce Gligor, Gerry McFadden, Margaret Oppihle and Agnes Bagley.
For those of you looking at this site for the first time, we have had programs on tracing your ancestors,
on the history and construction of castles & cathedrals, the Giants of Seville, the poetry of Wm. McGonagall (Scotland's
worst poet) and a poetry contest. We participated in activities associated with Ohio's Bicentennial, Tartan Day festivities, the
Brigadoon Celtic Festival in June in Burton and the Towpath Celtic Festival in Canal Fulton in August of 2003.
The group helped decorate Hower House for Christmas last year.We did that again this year - take a look
at our handiwork in the Music Room through the holiday season. Ann Heflin was in charge, and she did an outstanding job.If
anyone is interested, we will probably also help out once again "stationing" Stan Hywet for the annual Christmas tours.
Margaret Frost is the person to contact if you are interested in doing this.
We had a great time at our picnic in July. Good food and fellowship, and a rollicking baseball
game. Won by our team, of course (since both sides were ours). Our thanks to Bill Heflin for organizing the event,
and to all the participants -those who played and those who cheered.
In February of 2005 we plan a special "Scottish Sweetheart Celebration" - we're inventing a new tradition.
It will be a grand and glorious dinner dance, especially featuring single ladies of Scottish descent. All will be invited
to participate, not just members.
